Week 2 - First Discussion

Course Discussion

We get to meet with people who are also interested in music and wearable projects. We brainstormed the function and the appearance of our project. We came up with thousands of possibilities, but we decided our project would be an "interactive costume that responds to varying types of touch with matching moods of procedurally generated music.​" For the final showcase, we want two dancers wearing our product and dancing with each other, while the music will be created as they touch each other's body parts.

We are divided into three groups to do the literature review, the psychology of music and dance, the existing works, and the technology. I was in the psychology group, so I found a peer-reviewed journal regarding the expression and relationship of music and emotions. In this journal by Evans and Schubert (2008)., the research shows that expressed and felt emotions in 61% of cases received a positive effect from the music, which, the positive music is mostly preferred in these cases. 

Next Week

We will decide what is doable from our research.

Project Ideas This week we took the time to browse online and look for the inspirations. I mainly looked at the gaming industry but there was nothing attracted my eyes. After glancing over the discussion board, I found the idea of music created by physical movement very interesting in Lianna Wang's post ( https://youtu.be/GI8wJ1w71WA ). The wearable music interactivity project that Vivian Tian posted is also very interesting ( https://www.notimpossible.com/projects/music-not-impossible ). Week Five - Updates

Updates We received some feedback from all the departments we've reached out to in the last week. Some concerns were also brought up for the final performance after the presentation. To answer the question of how to make the performer uncomfortable, we finally decided to buy a body suit from Amazon for the base of our wearable product. Sewing the touch sensors on the bodysuit, and the sensors will display the dynamic visual art based on their position. We also want to use the concept of the board game "Twister": having the color dots mapped on a sheet, participants who are invited could drag the performer's arms and legs and put them on the dots, performer might end up having a posture that is very difficult to hold.  I was put in the Installation group after the discussion. Week Nine - The Acceleration

 Week Nine We had a small group meeting on Friday to work on the body suit to finish the chest, tummy, and back parts. I had to keep the same pose for Kaenan and Preeti to work simultaneously.  However, we had to meet on Sunday again to work on the bottom and leg parts. Kaenan worked on my right leg and Vivian helped work on another side which saved a lot of time. When we got to the bottom part, I had to keep bending over for Kaenan to put tape on which is the hardest for the whole time. We were in a rush to finish to suit because we were going to have a dress rehearsal on Monday that only opened for our friends. So Kaenan spent sacrificed her spare time to sew all the wires in, and Vivian soldered the wires on the sensor.  Before this Rehearsal, everyone was assigned a role in this show. Kaenan is the puppet's "safety guard" to stop any inappropriate touch naturally (don't break the show) if I can't handle it. Nick is the Ring Master to control the process of the
